Message from the Director of the Laboratory

Α step towards evidence-based governance
The complex issue faced by society require more than day-to-day management. Developing phenomena such as longevity, population ageing, new forms of work, artificial intelligence and globalization give rise to a rapidly changing landscape in Greece and worldwide. Increased uncertainty can imply both challenges but also opportunities.
In such as scene the importance of evidence-based governance is greatly enhanced. What is needed is social and policy making that can make use of and direct scientific knowledge. Universities are a critical hub– in the process of orienting, translating and transferring scientific research for the benefit of society at large.
The Department of Statistics and Insurance Science of the University of Piraeus was for decades a pioneer in Greece in the study of risk management insurance and actuarial science, that is in the definition, measurement and management of social risks. The Risk Management and Insurance Laboratory can improve the links between academic knowledge and society.

The Laboratory serves educational and research needs in the following cognitive objects:

Risk Management

Private and Social Security

Actuarism

The Laboratory aims at:

The development of applied interdisciplinary research to define, evaluate and measure risks faced by society, as well as to study the instruments available to meet these risks – through private, collective or state action.

Τhe dissemination and certification of professional training, for example through distance learning in English or Greek.

The provision of information to practitioners, professionals or public opinion – for example through websites providing access to international sources. The Laboratory will serve risk management experts, professionals in relevant sectors as well as a conduit towards best practice and know-how.

The collaboration with research centres and academic institutions in Greece and abroad, with other private or public institutions in related fields.

The organization of lectures, summer schools, seminars, symposia, conferences and other events; the publication of results; personnel exchanges involving Greek or foreign experts.

The provision of services to private individuals or firms, as provided for in legislation.

The production of printed or electronic media.

In assuming the management of the Laboratory, I hope to advance the vision set out by its first director, Professor Milton Nektarios.
